A True Sunderland Legend
Phillips joined Sunderland in 1997 and became an instant hero, scoring 35 goals in his first season—a post-war club record. Across six years on Wearside, he scored 130 goals in 235 appearances, helping Sunderland win promotion and establishing himself as one of the club’s most iconic players.
In the 1999–2000 Premier League season, he scored 30 league goals to win both the Premier League Golden Boot and the European Golden Shoe, remaining the only Englishman to have won the latter award.
